PRESIDENTIAL CAMPAIGN FANS
Copyright Burt J. Ofsaiof
APIC #5565

Ah, summer is here! as we sit back and enjoy our favorite TV show or read a new book or as we drive our car to visit our children or friends, we don't even notice the heat and humidity because of our air conditioning.

Long before air conditioning existed people would find as shady a spot as they could and use a hand held fan to stir the breeze. These fans were inexpensive, made of heavy paper or cardboard attached to a round or flat wooden stick. The most common fans were given away by funeral homes, church groups, or the neighborhood stores. It didn't take the politicians long to realize that these were a great advertising medium for their campaigns and Presidential candidates joined local politicians in issuing fans as campaign items.

The earliest fan I have found is one issued during the 1872 campaign of Horace Greeley. The fan features the hairless, beardless face of Greeley on the front with cartoons satirizing Greeley on the reverse. The fan is attached to a round wooden stick. Probabaly issued by those opposing Greeley's candidacy, A truly classic item, it is worth several hundred dollars today. Some of the more interesting fans encountered along the way are, a heart shaped fan without a handle issued c.1916 and featuring pictures of Washington, Lincoln and Woodrow Wilson ($50); a beautiful jugate fan from 1920 with the photos of Harding/Coolidge ($300); A 1933 FDR issue featuring photos of "Our President and His Cabinet" ($50)' and a memorial fan from 1968 which features photos of JFK, RFK, and Dr. Martin Luter King ($30).

More examples of fans can be found from the campaigns of Teddy Roosevelt (1912), Alf Landon (1936), Thomas Dewey (1944), Robert Taft (1948), Dwight Eisenhower (1952), Hubert Humphrey (1956) and Barry Goldwater (1964).
