How did he enjoy Portmarnock?
  • 4/19/12
My brother, by the way, is Allen Doyle, and he enjoyed Portmarnock tremendously. On Day 1, he teamed with his good friend Jay Sigel to beat Padraig Harrington and Paul McGinley in morning foursomes 2 and 1, then beat McGinley 6 and 4 in the afternoon singles. After sitting out the morning foursomes on Day 2, he was beaten by Jim Payne, 2 and 1, in singles. The US won that year, 14-10.
Two years later, at Interlachen, where the US won easily, 19-5, he won his Day 1 singles match, 1 up, over Iain Pyman, then teamed with Justin Leonard to beat Pyman and Stuart Cage, 4 and 3, before finishing with a 4 and 3 win over Dean Robertson.
What do you think the odds are that Paul, the great golf fan that he is, has never even heard of him?

I know of Allen. Well known guy, especially on the Senior Tour. A quick look shows he's 10th all time in the $$$$.  I've seen him a few times. Great  for you to have an 'insider' to get the scoop from.
Do you see him a lot?

Allen lives in Georgia, we're in CA, so unfortunately we don't get together a lot. For a number of years, when he was playing a full schedule on the Champions Tour, there were 2 events in Northern CA, so we could hook up there, but those tournaments have gone by the wayside. We have lots of family in Mass. and NH, and try to coordinate visits back there at least every other year. We have an aunt in NH who'll be turning 100 in August, and we'll be going there then to celebrate that with the whole family. We'll definitely get a few rounds in together during that trip.
He's had a great run on the Champions Tour, highlighted by this back-to-back Senior U.S. Open wins in 2005 and 2006. He also has the distinction of being the oldest rookie in PGA Tour history, getting his tour card in 1996 at age 47, and is also the only player to be medalist at both the PGA Tour Q-School and the Champions Tour Q-School.

Thanks for the inside scoop.  I've always watched the senior Tour ( LPGA Tour as well) . Your brother is a very familiar name to me. I knew about the 2 US Opens. I never knew about oldest rookie. Very interesting.

PS  Happy Birthday to your NH Aunt.

Must confess......I can't say I knew Allen Doyle before today.  Glad to learn about his interesting career in golf.  Turning pro at 47 is remarkable and to enjoy lifting many trophies too!!!  But....hey......he's a grade of Norwich University.  Gotta be a good guy and good at all he does.

(PS.....my son graduated from Norwich)

Exactly Villages. Interesting stuff.  Norwich  must be a class place. Does anyone know what Norwich meant of a UK Valentine card??

Pendragon is you brother still playing on the Senior tour? I could look it up but it's much more interesting getting the info from the horses mouth , so to speak.

I could cut and paste all the info about your brother, but how boring would that be when we have a live relative in the house.
