Woods Arrives at Augusta in Good Mood

Four-time champion Tiger Woods at the Tournament Practice Facility Sunday.

Tiger Woods arrived in Augusta late Sunday morning, headed straight for the golf course and quickly joined up with Mark O’Meara and Vern Cooley, an orthopedic surgeon from Salt Lake City who had operated on Woods' leg.

Woods’ practice round consisted of the first nine holes at Augusta National, which he was playing for the second time in three weeks. He also played it the Sunday before Bay Hill, where he won his first PGA Tour event in two-and-a-half years.

Lugging a sack of range balls to the practice tee and wearing a relaxed smile, Woods said he was in a good place.

“Physically I’m fine, I feel great, no aches and pains,” he said.

There were Woods smiles all around and his expansive demeanor perfectly reflected the warm and sunny afternoon.

He’s hoping that won’t change, but the four-time Masters champion is on a seven-year drought at Augusta National, where he last won in 2005 when he defeated Chris DiMarco in a one-hole playoff.

Woods feels as if he is clearly trending in a positive direction after his demolition of Bay Hill, where he led the field in total driving, birdies, greens in regulation and strokes gained putting.

On Sunday, he used his practice round in the usual, casual manner, which included putting toward different parts of the greens where he expects hole locations to be during the Tournament. He and caddie Joe LaCava also dropped some balls in spots just off the greens, from where Woods practiced his chipping, once again trying to spin the ball and stop it near where an imaginary hole would be cut.  If that’s momentum, Woods embraced it wholeheartedly.

“The whole idea is to get your game together and have it going the way you want at the time you want,” he said. “There are four times a year you want to be playing your best, and this is one of them.”

Woods has 14 major championship titles, four fewer than Jack Nicklaus, and is searching for his first major since he won the 2008 U.S. Open at Torrey Pines.
