When Tiger set the Masters record in 1997, he drove down the right side on holes 2, 7, 11, 15 and 17, thus getting a very good angle and level lie into the green. He did similar strategies in 2001 ans 2002. At that time, 13 was much shorter, thus the angle to get to the flatter part of the fiarway could be hit easily with a three wood. It is much easier to hit a controlled draw with a three versus a driver. Yest it is easier to hit a high cut with a driver.
ANGC added 2 inch rough and many trees down the right sides of the above mentioned holes and added much length to 1, 2, 8, 10, 11, 13, 15, 17, and 18th hole.
These changes forced all golfers to draw the ball more on these holes and play the holes farther to the left.
Anyone that plays golf today knows that a draw is harder to hit consistently versus a fade or cut. Left handers can hit a fade on these holes easier than right handers can hit a draw. It is also unfortunate that Tiger has had the normal missed shot to the right for many years. It's just this year that he is changing that miss.
These changes (narrowing of fairways with rough and trees) seemed to go against Bobby Jones original concept with the Masters - very wide generous fairways, but strategies requiring correct angles into the greens. As they say, it is a second shot course.
It's interesting that these changes were done after Tiger scored so low on the hollowed grounds of ANGC; but the changes were not done after Ray Floyd tied Jack's record in 1976.
