Caroline Wozniacki, former World No. 1 tennis player and girlfriend to current No. 2-ranked Rory McIlroy, feels her relationship with McIlroy has nothing to do with the current slumps each face.
"Obviously, when you have achieved so much at such a young age, everything maybe has come so easily," Wozniacki said, according to the U.K.-based Mirror newspaper. “You realize sometimes: ‘I’m going to win’ so you take a bit of time off."
Wozniacki has fallen from No. 1 to No. 7 in the Women's Tennis Association rankings, while McIlroy has missed the cut in four of his last five worldwide starts, including last week’s U.S. Open.
When the pair began dating last July, McIlroy was in the early stages of a tear culminating in earning the top spot in the Official World Golf Ranking at the Honda Classic in March. The Ulsterman will compete in his home nation in next week's Irish Open at Royal Portrush, where McIlroy set the course record of 61 when he was 16 years old.
Whether McIlroy finds his form again this week or not, his girlfriend is not stressing over it.
“You can’t be No. 1 in the world for 20 years," Wozniacki said, "unless you are Tiger Woods!"
