Hmmmmm...  D/S are ahead of Belgosto after compulsory dance.  Not sure I like this.  I love B/A's new OD and free dance.  Hope they'll pull up.

Go Johnny and Alissa!

It just seems like the judges will do ANYTHING to keep a Russian dance team on the forefront...I've never been very impressed with DomShab myself...they almost seem like a reproduction of Bestimianova and Bukin 20 years later, and just as frenetic....last year when they and Charlie and Meryl skated to the same FD, I thought that Charlie and Meryl should have been placed ahead because their dance had speed and movement and flow, and seemed to tell a bit of a story, while DomShab's to me was just a frenetic mess of showy moves going at a breakneck speed trying to cover up their technique issues....but it just seems like the judges CAN'T FATHOM in their little brains a world where Russians aren't leading in at least ONE division...that being said, compulsories has really never been Tanith and Ben's strength, that comes later in the original and free dance....if Domnina and Shabalin are still leading after THAT, something could be rotten in Denmark (unless the programs they skate really deserve it, which until I see with my eyes, I will HIGHLY doubt!)....I'm also dismayed that our girls didn't do better...at least Alissa is close enough to still be in the mix for a medal....Caroline however did GREAT..2nd place..and without that deduction, whatever it was for, she probably would have been in the lead!...This girl is making waves! Go Caroline!!!

  Josh,

Are you going to wait until after the broadcast iin two weeks before you go off on another rant about RUSSIANS!!?  It might be helpful to see the two programs, first.  D/S do skate at a frentic pace, and they chose the same music as ?/W.  (Forgot her last name who skates with Charlie White)  I agree that D/S have great extension on the PC score.

I think we should wait and see the programs.

I agree that Caroline Zhang must be skating well.  Not her best at 58-something, but for October that isn't bad.

   Go Kostner!

We got SILVER in pairs in CHINA!  Where my heart lies.  (I like pairs best)

Well, Evan & Johnny are sitting #1 & #2 w/good lead after the men's short.

US won Silver in the Pairs competition.

Caroline is 2nd after ladies short, love C.Kostner, but she usually falls apart in long, so go Caroline.

Only questionable judging I'm aware of is that same old tired song about Ice Dancing. Don't think B/A should've been 2nd in both Original & Comp. skate.  But then I'm always mistrusting when it comes to judging in that competition. No matter how the scoring style is adjusted to encourage fair play, the judges still do what they, without anyone knowing who issued what score.

Let's just wait and see how B/A do in the Ice Dance Free before we nail the coffin on these judge's.

Gosh Carla, I'm sorry...I didn't mean to ruffle any feathers...Domnina and Shabalin just leave me totally cold in all aspects..that's a personal opinion..I DID say I would wait to see what their programs looked like to compare side-by-side...and OF COURSE we should all do that...it just seems to me that D & S have been given sort of the "You DO get to pass go, you DO get to collect $200" pass of sorts ever since they came on the scene just a couple of years ago..I know they were world junior champs and all..but so were Charlie and Meryl and so were Tessa and Scott (I believe I have that right...please don't get after me too much if I don't..I've never professed to know everything!)...it's just, I know what style reaches me and speaks to me...and Domnina and Shabalin just don't, while Tanith and Ben and Charlie and Meryl and Tessa and Scott ALL do...

it's a personal preference thing, that's all, I can't explain it better than that....maybe I get a little too passionate about skaters that I like and claiming something must be rotten when the scores don't seem to add up...I can't help it, I'm a fan who loves the ones he loves!..perhaps I was too quick to judge, this will be the first time we've seen DomShab this year so far..if when I see them skate, I feel they deserved it, then I will be the FIRST to say they deserved it! (of course...as if we're really going to get to see any of the Ice Dancing besides the Free Dance..not in this TV climate!....I've never rooted for the TV writers' strike MORE..it could actually be GOOD for skating!)....

Anyway, Carla, sorry if I rubbed ya the wrong way! My apologies!

Awww thanks Carla..right back at ya girl!....I haven't even gotten the chance to check the results today because my family and I were gone halfway across the state to have an early Thanksgiving with my Mom's side of the family, and it was very nice!....I'm really proud of Tanith and Ben that they won the free..good for them! They seem to be in great early season form..I hope they can build on it the rest of the year....per my earlier thoughts, I suppose that Tanith and Ben really deserved it..sounds like DomShab may have had a fall..but the scores still weren't all that far apart for the top 3!....

I'm REALLY impressed that Keauna and Rockne got 2nd in their first Grand Prix event..this team is making a splash already..I just hope they can hold it together and stay strong and committed..we don't need yet ANOTHER young US pair team to call it quits!

Then, we have men's and women's..what's HAPPENED to Alissa and Bebe? They can't seem to get it together now.....Alissa with FOUR falls in the free skate?....it's just so disheartening...I was so hoping she'd build on Nationals last year...I have a fear that we're just never going to get to see her at her fullest potential, and that's just such a shame, because at her best she could skate circles around most of the ladies!...and Beatrisa just seems to have stalled in her progress...I hope they can put this event out of their minds and focus on getting it all solid for Nationals, there is time, they just have to BELIEVE!....

The interesting thing I saw is just how many deductions their were in the Ladies and even the Men's event...must've been a TOTAL splatfest!...bet there were some ice packs going on some butts after those events lol.....and as far as the guys go...gosh I knew that Johnny wouldn't really change THAT much..but the scores were SOOO close between him and Evan..only about 2.5 points....I suppose Evan went for the quad AGAIN and fell....I wish sometimes that he wouldn't go for it, because it's OBVIOUS by the scores he's getting that he DOESN'T need it..and it was the difference between gold and silver for him....but that being said both of their totals were HUGE!..I can't believe they beat the field by as much as they did, but that's a promising sign for later in the year....definitely will be interesting to see Johnny's program against Evan's and compare them side by side....I'm also glad to see that Stephane got the bronze, even with a lot of deductions...I hope he can conquer his recent jump issues..he has such a gift!.....

I also intend to at some point write a post about all the regionals I've been able to watch so far, and which skaters really jump out at me as having potential in the future..hopefully I can find time to do that soon...skating season is in full swing now....Now if we can just get these TV writers to keep marching for about 4-5 more months lol...

American Props (Based on early views on YouTube)

Men's Skate

Johnny Weir:

Another clean, waif-like performance by Johnny. However, I prefer the power/artistry combo of Evan Lysacek. I still believe Johnny must complete a quad consistently in competition to win gold in future worlds/Olympics. Besides all that, he needs an extreme hair makeover: either extra long or completely shave it off, something shocking IMHO=) Actually, his music selections seem like he's trying too hard to emulate past Russian champions. His on-and-off ice persona reminds me of Danny Elfman's offbeat soundtracks to Tim Burton's films. He should choreograph his programs accordingly, a la Johnny Depp on ice...

NOTE: What's with Russian coaches and fur coats btw?

Evan Lysacek:

I respect Evan for attempting the quad toe in both his SP and LP. He towers on the ice like a Shakespearean hero; I'm surprised he can pull of the quad/triples that he does. What's his official height anyway?

Ladies Skate

Caroline Zhang:

Captivating "Ave Maria" long program, even with the falls. She also omitted the triple salchow (which she fell on at Skate America), replacing it with a double axel instead. She could perform a more difficult/dynamic spiral sequence...

Alissa Czisny:

Yikes, she didn't land a single triple jump in her "West Side Story" medley LP=( Even though she's got fast spins and a lovely layback, without a triple-triple combination, I'm afraid she won't contend for a medal @ future worlds/Olympic Games.

NOTE: Could be an all-Asian sweep at this year's worlds with Mao Asada (Japan), Yu-Na Kim (Korea), and Caroline Zhang (Chinese-American) atop the podium - a first, I believe.

Pairs:

McLaughlin & Brubaker's "Moonlight Sonata" SP doesn't quite capture the hypnotic/soft quality of Gordeeva and Grinkov's LP rendition from their legendary 1994 comeback season. However, M&B's triple twist and her flexibility will give them a solid chance to qualify for the U.S. worlds team...

NOTE: I'm glad the death spiral is back btw.

Ice Dancing:

Does anyone else think that Belbin and Agosto's Original Program choice is kinda hokey for U.S. standards, much less international judges and audiences? Their Chopin LP is divine...
