I a mother of a son who attends an Eelemantary school in KCUSD, and was recently informed that a program called "Second Opportunity" is housed on my son's campus. According to the district, this program has been there for about 4 years, and what it does is that is gives kids who have been removed from the high school because of gang afflication, etc.and can not attend continuation (because of over crowding) and gives the students an opportunity to be placed in a similar continuation setting but on an this particular schools campus. Although the district insured me that these kids in this program do not have any contact with the elementary school kids, it worries me.
Being in education myself, I have started to research California's education codes to find out if a program of this nature is able to be conducted on a campus of general education, especially elementary schools. So my question is what else can i do? If anyone has and advice or resources, please let me know.
Thank you,
A Concerned Parent
