TO GET EVERYONE ON THE DISCUSSION TABLE IS A TASK BY ITSELF. WTO HAS ENDEAVOURED AND SUCCEEDED IN INITIATING A DIALOGUE BETWEEN NATIONS, WITH DISTINCT AND SPECIFIC ECONOMIC INTERESTS IN MIND. IT HAS BEEN A POWER STRUGGLE BETWEEN "FREE TRADE & TRADE WITHOUT BARRIERS" AND "NATIONAL/REGIONAL PROTECTIONISM". THE EXERCISE IS ON AND MOVING FORWARD, ALBEIT A BIT SLOW AT TIMES.

Hi Bharati,

it is 10 years to WTO and still struggling to establish as an Super Institution. Do you think GATS has made a great difference to the WTO that was earlier more or less GATT?

What is your opnion on the non-involvement of UN in the system of WTO. why is it that the World bodies are not working together to achive the basic targets of development?

pl get to me back for further discussions. I am Sridhar form JNU, New Delhi

good luck.

Dear Sridhar,

Thank you for your kind response.

With a specific reference to services, GATS, is wider in its scope.

Given the fact, that the UN and the WTO are both committed towards betterment of the plight of humans in their respective fields, I am not really sure if, the UN is totally unconnected with the WTO and would definately like to be enlightened on this aspect.
