With the news of Broadway for Ramon Castro and $$$, I am reminded of all of the old Sox trades, where they traded young players for old established players in an attempt to make another run at the playoffs.
Going all the way back to 1960, Norm Cash, Bubba Phillips, and John Romano to get Minoso back; and Johnny Callison for Gene Freese. They also sent Earl Battey and Don Mincher for a washed up Roy Seivers. They finished 3rd that year.
I know we have made some good trades over the years but the trading of young prospects for players with only one or two years left always leaves me worried that we have traded our future (again). That is not to say that I am a big Lance Broadway fan or that we do not need a catcher who can actually throw a runner out. Lance has yet to live up to his promise and perhaps we were ready to dump him for nothing , so getting something in return is a plus. Only time will tell |
