Here’s the latest from the Southern Nevada Officials Association:

-          the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association, peeved that we were better prepared than they were at their September meeting when they considered the matter of sanctioning the new association, gave one year’s notice of their intention to cancel the current contract between the NIAA’s member schools and the Southern and Northeastern official’s associations, and the various components that make up the Northern Nevada association effective September 23, 2010…

-          the NIAA itself is not a signatory to the contract…nobody from the state office has a signature on the contract, so we are not entirely sure they can cancel a contract they are not a signatory to…on the other hand, they are a state agency and there are signatories on the contract who are members of the NIAA, so we are not entirely sure they cant either…

-          also, our attorney advised us that they can give one year’s notice…without getting into too much detail, my own layman’s interpretation of the contract is that it is set for this school year and the following school year, but that appears to be wrong…this means the NIAA wants to cancel its officiating contract in the middle of the fall sports season…

-          I don’t really think the NIAA is prepared for what could happen, not the upset of the year…after seeing them in action last month it was easy to see why 1) they are in court fairly regularly and 2) why they are 1-11 in court cases…their goal is clear: to get the new association officiating basketball games, however by canceling the contract they have canceled it statewide, not just here in Vegas…this means that any other association interested in officiating games can petition the NIAA for sanctioning and a contract…President Vince and I were discussing this yesterday…there are a handful of basketball associations in town, plus a couple of baseball and football associations plus other associations up north and it would be in our best interest to have all of them express interest just to see the chaos that would ensue…

-          we hear the NIAA’s goal is to have individual contracts for every sport…what they want and what they get may be two separate things…if the three current associations can provide a united front to the NIAA and say, look, friends, you sign this contract with us exclusively or you are going to be in a box next Sept. 24th, the NIAA may not have a whole lot of options because while there are associations who could handle a single sport, there are only three associations capable of handling every sport…

-          we don’t think much is going to happen until after the SNOA Board of Control elections on Nov. 10…everyone but Vince - 1st VP Scottie, 2nd VP Joel and board members at large Mr. Evans and myself - are all up for either reelection or election following appointment to the board…we are all running, however Joel being Joel, he is running for Scottie’s 1st VP seat, leaving the 2nd VP’s seat open…no one else has announced they are going to run, tho I would be highly surprised if the old boys didn’t offer a slate of candidates and try to wrest control back…if they do Vince is probably a goner, because three board members can vote to remove another board member…

And a maverick like me is not going to worry too much about going by the book..- Fliptak, Summer, 2009
