In an October 15, 2009 essay entitled "A Manifesto! The Time Has Come," Bishop Spong writes, "I have made a decision. I will no longer debate the issue of homosexuality in the church with anyone." The hatred and intolerance must come to an end, he says, and we must not support those--including those in the church--who would continue to compromise justice for homosexual people.

Bishop Spong adds, "I invite others to join me in this public declaration. I believe that such a public outpouring will help cleanse both the church and this nation of its own distorting past."

I, too, support the Manifesto 100%. It's been going on far too long and it's time to stop the exclusion of gays in the churches and in society in general.

Human beings are human beings; that seems beyond debate to me. I gladly co-sign the manifesto.

Wow, I can't agree more. I'll sign and sign again. This hate must be confronted head on and soon. A must, lest we degenerate into backwood type mentality creatures here in the US.

Lets get on with the real issues of life and existance on this planet.
I equate the discussions on sexual orientation and aborton with the ancient concern about how many angels could stand on the end of a pin.
Lets work on WHAT LOVE IS.
A much more challenging project.

It is with extreme gratitude to Bishop Spong that I add my name to this "Manifesto!" In the past few days we have witnessed the Congressional passage of the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd, Jr. Hate Crime Bill and the signing of that act by President Obama - ten years of hard work now accomplished, but only a start. It is difficult to understand the hatred of those who oppose LGBT equality, spending millions of dollars in Maine and Washington. Their animus cannot be easily ignored or tolerated.

I agree with your stance, Bishop Spong. Thank you for having the courage to frame it. It is time to end all types of prejudice.
