My wife and myself will bespeinding a week the end of noext Jan. at an Elder Hostel where one of the courses is entitled "Against Religion/For Religion" which I imagine will bring about a lengthy debate from both sides.  Would appreciate any comments for or against that we could take along to share with our own comments on this subject.  I am under the impression from his new book thqt Bishop Spong feels he has moved past traditional religion  and its teaching into something more profound and more personal.

It is at Stetson University in Deland, Fl. and runs from Jan 31st to Feb. 5th.  The other courses at the same time are on Earnest Hemingway and how musical themes affect a movie.  we have been here before for courses and have always found them very interesting.  In fact, it was here a few years ago that I first heard Bishop Spong and he started me thinking religiously off the so-called beaten track of most every day religion.  the professor teaching this course we have heard before so we are quite sure the course will be stimulating.  I don't know where you live but if it is convenient for you I would recommend it. You'll find details in the current Elder Hostel Catalogue.

Hi AF,

I wouldn't dream of gumming up this discussion at the Hostel for you, but I would love to have you and the Missus contemplate this enigma inside of an enigma and brotch this subject at that conference. First, go back and familiarize yourselves with the news of Lazerus's illness, death and the events of his ressurection. Continue this triolgy upto and during J's trial when Pilot askes, who was it the people desired him to release. In all of the Bibles I've ever read, the same Word was used; not Greek, nor Latin nor English but an Aramaic one that when accuratly translated isn't a noun as we've been led and taught to believe and use, but a Phrase. That word is BAR-ABBAS. If this is who the People were asking for, why are we programmed to believe that the person allegedly depicted was an outlaw, brigand and murderer that was released?

The People asked for, (Bar-abbas in English) Release unto us THE SON Of The Father  As you've followed the story up to this point, would say that some of the same folk that witnessed J's power over Death, would of been motivated to beseech Pilot to release the Son of the Father to them? Of all the words translated from the various languages the Bible was compiled from, why was Barabbas left untouched and depicted as if it was a proper Noun?

Have Fun!

Hi Juan

In replyy to your post concerning Bar-abbas I do not have an answer for you at this point as I am not a Biblical scholar and had never seen this point raised before.  It is a good question and I will try to get some sort of answer for you from the professor at the Elder Hostel.  the course itself, Against Religion/For Religion, I am pretty sure based on other courses we have taken from this same professor,             ,I think will mostly concern itself for both sides of an ongoing argument as to which side is right in their thinking on this point.  I am sure you have read Spong's newest book showing how his thinking has changed through the years (as has my own).  I feel there are many definitions of "Religion" and what it means to any one person.  Some find great comfort in the security a Father God offers while I personally do not feel this is the answer so accept God as a Spirit of life within oneself leading one to always try to be the best one can be.  How about yourself?

Hi AF,

I'm an Agnostic product of the U.S.Military Indstrial complex, who was  subjected to a PTSD programming method that motivated me to Kill my fellowman on command, for the protection of Elite minority Corporate interests.

After reading this; www.Warisaracket I realized I had to come to grips with the spirit that'd also been instilled in me. For over thirty years, that Spirit whispered to me that I was the best I could be, Proud, Patriotic, and Always Faithful; SEMPRE FIDELIS.

My original question really stems from the awareness I've developed to view All Religion as the soft-sugar-coated-drivel created by governments to control the masses by other means than brute force. Politics and Religion are opposit sides of the same Control-Coin.

Peace,

The Juanster

Thanks for your last e-mail.  While I am not officially listed as an Agnostic (bymyself that is) I certainly feel as you do that the public has been fed a bill of goods for years by the military and its friends incongress.  Throughout historyI feel tht religion of one sort or another has probably caused moe world problems than any other single thing. And, currently, we are living in an economy that is spending more money (and costing lives) than any thing else.  Hoefully, some day this will change but probably not in my lifetime.   Was not familiar with Warisaracket but checked it out.  thank you.

HI AF,

I too was a Marine, it's why so much of what the General said resonated with me.

Instead of repeating myself:

http://forums.prospero.com/sp-bishopspong/messages?msg=4027.12

Aw, Heck, I'll copy the pertinent part:

I consider religion to be something universally unhelpful to the evolution of thought and spirit; the rather lucrative business of telling others what is "True" and what is "False", what is "Evil" and what is "Holy".

When people are free to believe that which their intellects, feelings, spirits and experiences pull them rather than tethered to a relatively fixed set of writings or teachings or elders who define a religion and not incidentally live off its proceeds, that a new brotherhood can develop and Christianity/Buddhism/Daoism/Hinduism/agnosticism (as meant to be) can flourish without any "Church" to "guide" them.
