Clue No. 1
Oh great King Boreas, make winter glorious: Unleash the medallion quest! We'll be up front: We devote the hunt To Box, our friend, now at rest
Usual setup clue. Mentions Don Boxmeyer, who passed away this year. He wrote clues from 1994-2001, and incidentally, wrote extensively on Swede Hollow in his books and Pioneer Press columns.
Clue No. 2
Tramping hill and dell, you may hear tell About the contests waged of yore Much of the history remains a mystery Which we hope to bring to the fore
“Tramp”ing relates to the hobos that were drawn to Swede Hollow after the area was cleared in the ‘50’s. “Dell”wood Place is a street adjacent to the park, as is “Hope” St. Most of Swede Hollow’s history is largely oral or “tell” based.
Clue No. 3
All we see was done naturally Water and ice are here In this harbor of impressive arbor Approach and have no fear
Swede hollow is largely undeveloped and in a natural state. “Water and ice” are present with Phalen Creek, whichs runs through the park. “Arbor” denotes the many trees that dot the park. Swede Hollow cannot be seen until it is “approached” from its ingress, which may be unsettling to enter such an isolated and hidden location.
Clue No. 4
Even those in detention during our recent convention, Heard a politically hip chick Is it a pig or pit bull, it was argued most fitful, That looks more lovely in lipstick?
The former Parental School and “Detention” home, later Totem Town, now Wilder Residence East, is nearby. “Chick”ens, “pigs,” and other animals were raised in Swede Hollow when it was inhabited. “Fitful” denotes the trails used for walking and other exercise.
Clue No. 5
It takes all sorts to come and play sports In this sweet land of fun and frolic With bower enclosed and beasts exposed You're bound to lose your colic
“Sweet Land” is a 2005 film that depicts a Scandanavian immigrant coming to Minnesota. The park is an “enclosed bower” area in that it is a ravine sheltered by trees. From Swede Hollow’s elevated vantage points, though, one can see the “beasts” of the St. Paul skyscape “exposed.”
Clue No. 6
The dankness of the vale may your spirit impale: The setting seems oh so gloomy! But be brave, you endless knave, You'll find it really quite roomy.
Swede Hollow is a flood worn, or “dank” valley, or “vale.” The park may seem gloomy but is very large, or “roomy.” “Endless knave” is an anagram for Svenske Dalen, the original Swedish name which translates to Swede Valley, or Swede Hollow. “Dankness” and “vale” also form an anagram for the Svenska Dalen, the preferred variation of spelling.
Clue No. 7
'Neath King and Court, they once did cavort As though living in times quite feudal But time brings change, so it's not so strange To see an owner walk his poodle
Swede Hollow residents lived and “cavorted,” literally, under”neath” Dayton’s Bluff, where the well-to-do, or “Kings” of Saint Paul resided. Economically, they even lived below the means of average citizens, or “Court.” One could argue, it was not very different from feudal life, culminated by the medieval-like appearance of the old Hamm mansion looming over the land. Years later, it is now a park with trails suitable for walking. |

This is great that you're thinking this all out and defending why you think it's there...... couple of things to keep in mind:
First off at this point there are excellent arguements for Cherokee, Battle Creek, Kellogg, and Upper Landing/Levee. Even Como but that fits every year. And keeping with the tradition of RED HERRINGS you can't put all your eggs in one basket.
Secondly I used to make the mistake of spelling it all out for everyone on why I thought it was at a certain park. These forums are great for people throwing out ideas and WORKING the clues but there are a lot of people who don't do ANY work to figure out the clues and get on here halfway in and just wait for someone to spoon feed it to them. Previous finders have even mentioned that they or their kids went onto the boards to see where everyone thought it was.
I'm down with sharing ideas just not helping the lazy. It's always funny you get all these people get on the boards around clue 8 or 9 and say "Sorry haven't been on here yet so where do guys think it is?" and everyone on here spells it out for them and they benefit from everyone's hard work. |

Yeah, I know. Believe me, I was very apprehensive about posting my thoughts, but ultimately I did for two reasons: 1. SH was already in many people's sights -- at this point, people leaning towards SH still will lean towards SH regardless, whereas people convinced it is somewhere else are usually so stubborn that it takes the last couple clues before they get on board. 2. If it is at SH, and it gets down to the final clue, it will be a logistical nightmare. People's safety will be at risk more so than in most years past. I'd rather the medallion be found uneventfully, then have lawsuits and injury and a threat to remove the medallion hunts altogether -- and I see the potential of those things if a 12th clue at Swede Hollow scenario occurred. |

| I would just like to thank you for being willing to share. After all isn't that what these boards are for? As someone who has been on here for years, and hunting for years and years, and sometimes posting and sometimes not, new people do have to learn how, be mentored and get enough confidence to post, so keep up the good work. |

| And really, almost as much as I like the hunt, I like being able to come to this message board to see the same familiar names year after year. Like PigsEyePaul, Oldtimr, and TaterGirl. And others of course. I know my chances of ever finding the medallion are slim to nothing because of the sheer number of hunters out there. I appreciate the camaraderie the hunt brings, and it seems as if the message board has been pretty tame and respectful overall this year. Which is good! |

| Agreed. I tried the new boards and I didn't like them. I hope the PP keeps this now "unofficial" board open for us hunt veterans. I can't bring myself to trust a new clue thread unless I see "Oldtimr" next to it! |

| I like the size of this one now. And I'm pretty sure all of the boards are interpreting the clues the same way for the most part. And I don't want to have to figure out how to navigate the new place. |
