E-voting: Can we count on it?

To any one / all of the distinguished panel,

I am trying to research for two papers for my data models and information security classes. I have chosen the subject of the e-vote.  I am a 'war-baby (d.o.b. 1944)' returning to obtain a Masters of Sciene in Information Systems. So forgive me, if I don't ask the 'perfect' questions---I'm old---but trying!!!

For database models, I would like to know what the future of remote e-voting might take on data collection and storage (databases) of the responses.  Are we looking at existing technologies or is something in the mill?  I'll have to get a little technical, so direct me where I may have a chance to understand after the 2nd reading...

For information security, I've read Avi's opinion and I believe with him on all those issues, I would like to obtain more respected opinions, and if possible, do any positive opinions exist among the scientific community?  It doesn't seem so, so could you direct me to a 'respected opponents' opinion? I will be needing conurrance on those security issues, so one positive endorsement will suffice.

The whole issue sounds scarry to me.  I'm against it simply on audit trails alone , let alone poor design, programming, testing, and secrecy!  I feel that once every four years, we should take the time and handle the voting manually.  After all, I had to supply my paper voter ID card that was compared to the pre-printed voter registration list, and sign my name.  It's been over 15 years, and the 'paperless' society doesn't exist yet!

Would any of you be so kind to point me to resouces my profs will accept as references?  All your credentials are great, and I would like to have your names and schools on those papers!!!

Than-you so much,

-kq
