I cannot believe that the world's most technologically advanced nation is generating so much angst over electronic voting machines. India, the world's largest democracy, has been using simple, Indian-designed, rugged (some machines have to be carried to the polling station by catamaran (the manual kind!), elephant back or even camels!). Earlier this year, we had elections to the national parliament, where an electorate of close to half a billion took part. Some seats had as many as 120-plus candidates. Today (October 15), results to the state assembly elections were declared. Almost 33 million voters, 288 seats, results declared within 6 hours, and consider this - not a single protest or court case. 100% electronic voting. Maybe Diebold should outsource the electronic voting machine business to us ;)
