Oh please. Your grandkids aren't going to be harmed by people smoking outside. Did you notice that there is a lot of air out there, like, pretty much an infinite amount? The world is round afterall. What's wrong with you? Are you insane? There is more pollution in outside air caused by cars -- do you think they should be banned? I think you should move your grandkids to the country, because there is WAY WAY too much air pollution here in the cities. You need some serious help. If you're that overprotective, I feel sorry for your lineage. |

"2. All of this financing and usage debate does nothing at all to address the deadly aspect of second-hand smoke. Really, if you look at it from a different vantage point than any that has been discussed by anyone I've noticed, there is nothing else in our society that we KNOW FOR CERTAIN KILLS NOT ONLY THE USERS, BUT INNOCENT BYSTANDERS INCLUDING CHILDREN, that is legal and allowed, much less debated as to its intrinsic or monetary value." I've been smoking for 30 years. Have I already died and don't know it? My non-smoking grandmother was around my aunt's smoking everyday for 60 years and died in her 90's of natural causes. I guess she didn't know she was supposed to die from "second hand smoke" 60 years earlier. Come back when you have real proof, not the anti's and Big Medicine's myths. |

Apparently the logic center of your brain has. Seriously, can you name one positive thing about smoking? If some idiot made recreational use of heroin legal, would you fight for your right to use that also?

If some idiot made heroin use legal, I wouldn't have to fight for my right to use it, because it'd be legal.
Are you OK? Is the logic center of YOUR brain working?
Can I name one positive thing about smoking? Yes, I can. I enjoy smoking when I have a beer. They taste good together. I'm just a recreational smoker - only when I drink. And if I go the bar to smoke, I'm not harming anyone any worse than those people are harming themselves, because only smokers go to the bar I go to. Of course, now we're all outside on the patio. The inside of the bar is empty. It will go out of business soon. You nonsmokers aren't coming out to the bars to make up for the lack of business.
I don't even see why nonsmokers care so much about an establishment they never even go to. I wouldn't if I were them. For example, I'm not a nudist, so I don't go to nude beaches or places where people hang out in the nude. But I'm not going to put all my time and effort into stopping that behavior, which may or may not be psychologically harmful to some who participate. It's still their choice. |

"Are you OK? Is the logic center of YOUR brain working?" I'm guessing Harleychic hasn't been wearing her helmet when on her bike. The pavement isn't good on the brain either.

What's up, satmfs? Know of anything going on with the referendum? What happened to smokersunitemn.org?
I know we're trying to keep things more hidden from Moffit.... oh and by the way, hello Mr. Moffit -- get back to work! (cause I know he'll read this, he's a blog and message board ADDICT). |

Apparently you forgot that Harleychic does not own a motorcycle, that she has a pet named Harley. I wish you both would stop the silly recess-time put-downs, and stick to the issue. I know that you and I are miles apart on this issue, but I do not attribute your failure to agree with me to brain failure, stupidity, et cetera. We are two adults who differ on this issue. Period.
I think what Harleychic meant was that you and most smokers are very deeply in denial about the effects of your habit on yourself and others around you. Smokers tend to unquestioningly accept the denials issued by the tobacco industry, despite boatloads of research and clinical studies that show tobacco is carcinogenic. It is true that it does not have a 100% kill ratio: some users remain unaffected, while most others have serious health problems and die prematurely. It is this same denial that shows up in the second-hand smoke debate: "If smoking cannot harm me, then how could it possibly harm those around me?" The rub is that those non-smokers around you do not buy into the mountain of denial about the effects that smokers do. As someone said, roughly: go ahead -- smoke three cigs at a time if you want, just don't pollute MY body with your toxins. |

| Thank you Madman - I am flattered that you remembered all of that about me! You said everything I meant to say but did a much better job of doing so than I did. Lisa says she wouldn't have to fight for the right to use heroin because it would be legal but I was comparing that to their fight to use cigarettes wherever they choose while they (cigarettes) are legal. In my haste, I failed to make a clear comparison and it seemed to have gone right over their heads. Thanks again! |

You are welcome! I am an advocate of clear communication, but practice it imperfectly. It is great to hear that I interpreted someone else correctly -- especially from the person who got interpreted. Thanks for an uplifting post! |

| Sorry if my message was confusing. It seems that you are saying that since you have been smoking for 30 years and haven't died from it yet, that you assume it isn't harming you? Is that what you meant? |
