In the lure of Philadelphia sports, there are some figures that stand out. One of them is Ricky Watters of the Eagles for his remarks about running across the middle and catching a pass with approaching defence.
"For who, for what," might go down as one of the most alienating things that any athlete has said in the city, but Cole Hamels may have him beat. His remarks about 'hoping the season would be over' and that he 'did his job' after giving up five runs in 4.1 innings really irked me and hopefully rubbed many others the wrong way. The Watters remarks ran him out of town. Let's hope Hamels is next.

Hamels deserves a mulligan after what he did last year. I think he meant that as an individual. The year has been so bad for him that he can't wait for it to end and start next year. |

| And that is your potential Game 7 starter. Hopefully you get there, it would be nice NY choke it away again but when the hell did David Ortiz take over for Ryan Howard? |

That comment was him beign embarrassed by his performance this year...you are taking it out of contect and spinning it for no reason... and by thy way...it is 'lore of Philadelphia sports' not 'lure'... unless of course you use a Phillies Rooster tail or and Eagles jig out on the pond...then of course, I am mistaken and apologize... Ouch...Ortiz to Howard is too closed to home right now man! (But so damn true at the moment!) Two more games....PLEASE! "A morning of awkwardness is far better than a night of loneliness" |

| Hey, thank god Utley/Werth are carrying the team offensively. You have to figure at some point Howard is going to wake up. Damon did the same thing in 2004 and woke up in game 7 vs the yanks with a slam and 7 rbi's. Hopefully the phils get a shot at game 7. |

| That's how I'm taking it, too. He can't wait for his year of inconsistency to be over. He gets the benefit of the doubt this time. |

| Yeah, it's pretty shocking they're still playing with Howard and Ibanez so off. Ryan needs to wake up, and now. They need him for game 6. |

| Agreed. It is a tall task to win 2 straight in Yankee stadium but it can be done. I think Pedro is the best guy you can have going as he won't be intimidated. |

Watters was a good player for years, Hamels is a one- year wonder. while the comments of both are annoying hamels annoys me even more, because he hasn't really done squat in his career. watters was far more accomplished" Civilazation exists by geological consent, subject to change without notice." {Will Durant} |

| Hamels is just beginning his career, but you're right, he hasn't done squat, WS MVPs are a dime a dozen in Philly. |

exactly, he was speaking about his performance this year. I think it is laughable that no one takes into account that he threw 262 innings last year, 70 innings more than his career high. There has been research done on guys who throw over 240 inning and their performance the next year; in every single instance there was a noticable drop off in production.

| Yeah, you have the crystal ball, and know for a fact that a talented 25 yr old pitcher is done for. With such awesome predictive talents, why are you wasting your time here? |

educating guys like you, thats why I am here. and you're welcome. who said anything about the future, the thread was comparing the two situations where stupid comments were made, so the only info to go on is known data, this means whats been done by the player so far. has nothing to do with the future, AT THIS POINT IN TIME, hamels is a 1 year wonder has nothing to do with what he may do . he has one good year and he's making these comments like he's been an ace for a decade. yeah cuz 15-5 with an ERA under 3.5 in 2007 was terrible. he is such a one year wonder. wake the hell up. he is suffering from an innings jump like verlander and many others did. im sure in 2007 folks thought cliff lee was a one year wonder as well. ricky watters straight up quit on the field. if you look at one statement out of context and spin it 180 degrees it is still not close. "just made my point 1 year wonder." One year wonder? He was the World Series MVP in just his third year in the league. In the two previous years, he was a combined 24-13 (.649) with a 3.68 ERA. For his first three years, he was 38-23 (.623) with a 3.44 ERA. I don't think you made your point at all. |

| Might want to educate yourself on our "one year wonder". Comments "like he's been an ace for a decade"? Maybe it sounds that way to a WIP mind-set, but I haven't heard any comments anywhere close to that. |

sure i did, you just missed it . he hasnt earned the right to have that sort of attitude. Not that its right to have that attitude at all, let alone say it publicly in front of people. he's acting like he's had a career already.
