 General -  Signings

I work in Canary Wharf darn the east end of London and I have noticed that the local branch of Waterstones in the shopping mall beneath the offices has quite regular book signing events.

The other day they had Martin Chivers signing his autobiography - damn I missed it! - COYS.

But I wondered whether there is any mileage in using these to get hold of signed copies and selling them on at a premium. Do people do this? Or is it a waste of time?

If an author is doing a tour of signing sessions, chances are there will be a LOT of signed copies about, so the premium is going to be limited, unless (a) the author drops down dead shortly afterwards or (b) you are prepared to put the books aside as an 'investment' for a year or ten.

At the extreme, there is the case of Peter Hamilton's 'Naked God' sf novel, where the publisher craftily sent all the first printing to shops where he would be signing..so an UNsigned copy is actually going to be the rarity (!)

But at least you can guarantee (and say so in your description) that the signature is genuine.

I regularly attend book signings.  I have made a decent profit fairly quickly on books signed by David Attenborough, Jack Vettriano, Brian McGilloway and a few others.  OTOH, I am building up quite a nice personal collection of signed books that haven't sold, yet.

What's with all the deletions ?  Is there somebody who had all their posts pulled by Prospero ?
