General -  Is it worth selling anymore

On checking my listings recently for possible repricing , I noticed that 75% of my books are listed by other sellers for 1p, they obviously have a one price agreement with Royal Mail. What did  concern me however was when I listed a Haynes Manual these were also listed at 1p. These manuals cost the small seller such as myself on average £4.25 to send by parcel post. I just don't know if it is worth the bother any more.Perhaps free postage on all items might level the playing field as on Play.com where every one competes for sales on a fair price with no 1p sales.

The same sellers are offering a lot of the same books on Play for £2.25 or even £2.00 compared with £2.76 on this site

The playing field is fine instead of amazon doing free postage you need to get a ppi account or chose your stock more carefully.

It is becoming more and more difficult to source books that have any value on Amazon.  For my first four years of selling, I would find about 30% of my books worth listing; I am now lucky to find 5% as I refuse to sell at silly prices.  Many of those that I do list are, of course, immediately undercut by 1p.

And it was not unusual to get a 'Seller Waiting' message.  These books invariably sold immediately.  Not seen that for 6 months or more.  Neither have I made an immediate sale for the same length of time.

With the huge decrease in my sales levels since Seller Central appeared, Amazon is largely a waste of time.  I will persevere until Christmas and if I see no improvement there will be litle point in continuing.

I was expecting the sort of replies I have received. I would gladly offer my "1p" books for sale at £2 each on this site,  this would increase my sales greatly but unfortunately the present situation does not allow for this as the system obviously favours the large sellers and leaves us small fry to pick up the scraps with some select books and hope to make a small return on our efforts. I aggree with your comments MFS, I am thinking of digging out my books which are listed by other sellers at 1p and   off loading to auctions or Car boots and concentrate on more collectable /sellable items. This would deplete my stock by approximately 75% which demontrates how far the 1p situation has inflicted on us small sellers.PPI agreements  are fine for those living in urban areas with large turnover but are they freely available for others and would RM entertain a small seller living in a rural area.

How many penny books are there listed for your particular items? If it's pages of them, listing is probably a waste of time. However, if it's just a handful there will be times when they all disappear and buyers (who don't study historical prices) will probably be perfectly happy to pay a few pounds for yours. It would take a while, of course, but that only matters if storage space is a problem. Also, it has frequently been observed on these pages that a book with a good condition description will often sell for considerably more than the competing penny books.

Higher up the 'food chain' the same thing applies. I know of a couple of sellers who charge much more than me for the same titles, but presumably they sell them eventually.

Hiya

you beat me to it - I would advise the OP to spend a little bit more time on market research. Large swathes of books being offered at a penny are in reality worth much, much more than that.

Broaden your range of goods. Boxing yourself into one line of stock leaves you open to exactly the situation you describe.

PPI is very simple to organise. Location doesn't matter, the only stumbling block is the annual spend. Collection services are also at a fixed price - currently £500 a year or just about £2 a day.
