Update on my IBS.

Chocolate seems to trigger it.

I've been cutting out the chocolate lately, and IBS has hardly been noticeable.

I bought a big bar of fairtrade chocolate in a Co-op while out for a drive today, and ate most of it.
My IBS is back.

I'll need to try it a few times to confirm, but I'm fairly sure it's the chocolate. It might be the cocoa in it, or it could be the high fat content.

Yep! I sometimes eat a small bar and that usually does it for me as well. Coffee is also a trigger, so if I have not been for more than a day, I drink a mug of coffee...LOL! Works every time. Problem is that it takes a while to work off. Could  be the caffeine content and how it's stored in the raw material? Try some dark chocolate and see if same effect. If not, could be another ingredient. Some bars have veg oil in them, which can also not help.

Frances.

As Frances says Dark chocolate can be alot easier to digest than milk.I find if I eat milk it sets my rhinitis off but dark is fine.......I still follow a wheat free diet BTW and haven't had any recurring symtoms since only trouble now is I seem to of become sensitive to carbohydrates so have been avoiding potatoes in an evening seem to be OK if eaten earlier in the day though.........I get fed up though it is real pain when we got out to eat......there is wheat everywhere and dairy.I take a digestive enzyme if I can't avoid things

I'm down to one cup of coffee a day, and a pot of tea.

Thinking throught this, I seem to recall having some IBS symptoms after visiting, or having visitors, and drinking a few cups of coffee.

The worst recent episode was when I bought a chocolate cake (reduced in Asda) round when visiting someone, who gave me a few cups of strong filter coffee.

It's all falling into place now, but at least I get to eat some more chocolate while testing!

I ate the rest of the chocolate about an hour ago and can feel the effects already - looks like I've got to the bottom (haha) of the problem.

I'll try some dark chocolate sometime & see what happens.

After lots of testing, mixing and matching, I think I have finally narrowed down what upsets my bowel to just one thing: food.

So Donald - how are you gonna get round that one? I am smiling as I write this. Is it not about time that you got yourself properly sorted?

By the way how is the driving thing going.

Frances.

Not sat another test yet. I have been driving around with Ruth though. We went to Arran for a couple of days and I drove round the island a couple of times.

Went to Diabetes clinic yesterday as I got accepted for the new trial drug Byetta and I am now the proud user of an injectable pen with a 30 day supply inside. This drug is very expensive, so as yet not GP funded, so it has to come from the clinic. We got trained in how to load it add a needle and stab the needle into ourselves then press the button. Had my first dose 30 mins before tea. Already my sugar level has gone down .2 since tea and I have not felt so hungry, so if I do not get side effects it may be the answer to some of my problems.

It works by preventing the liver from releasing stored sugar into the bloodstream after a meal and it helps the body use and make better insulin. Also seems to help switch off hunger pangs. Of course we were told that increasing our exercise and eating better and smaller portions would help too. We have a 1% sugar improvement target and a 5% weight loss target by end of year. So watch this space and I will let you know from time to time how it's going.

Frances
